The second data brief in NANA's State of Associations Quarterly series for 2026 looks at new-member onboarding practices and how they predict first-year renewal. Drawing on responses gathered alongside the annual survey behind State of Associations 2026, it finds that new members who complete a structured onboarding call within their first 30 days renew at a rate 9 percentage points higher than those who don't, and that a single named staff contact — rather than a general membership inbox — measurably reduces new-member support tickets.

The brief also reports that only 44 percent of responding organizations send a welcome packet within a new member's first week, and that new members who attend at least one event within their first 90 days are more likely to renew regardless of the association's overall renewal rate. It closes with three practical changes membership staff can make before their next new-member cohort.
